Germany’s Christmas Markets have been going strong for centuries: Dresden’s Strietzelmarkt dates back to 1434 with its famous Stollen cake still taking centre stage today.

Wooden market stalls offer typical local food – a from hot sausages and Glühwein to gingerbread and roasted nuts – and traditional tree and crib decorations are sold, while open air concerts round up this feast for all senses.

Most German towns start their markets four weeks prior to Christmas Eve, but check dates and places here: www.germany.travel/christmasmarkets – including video footage (click on Media gallery).
