Forest Fires Cause Marbella Evacuation

Thousands of people in Marbella have been evacuated as forest fires continue to threaten the region, with an 11km-wide section of forest surrounding the Mediterranean resort ablaze today. Hundreds of firefighters, nine aircraft and as many helicopters are tackling the fire. The flames broke out in the Sierra Negra Mountains on Thursday afternoon.

“We can say there are thousands of people evacuated, mostly as a precautionary measure,” said Elias Bendodo, head of the Malaga provincial government. “A relative lack of humidity, strong winds and high temperatures in the afternoon helped the fire to grow quickly,” said a statement by the regional government of southern Andalusia.
