Highlights in Northern Ireland for 2019

Northern Ireland has lots of new exhibitions, sports events and experiences to take advantage of in 2019 – from The 148th Open or touring a royal castle to Game of Thrones: The Touring Exhibition. Whether you are after an activity that’s suitable for a family, group of friends or something you can enjoy alone, there’s plenty from which to choose.

The 148th Open

The Open is one of the largest golf Championships in the world and in 2019 it’s coming to Royal Portrush, where it was last staged back in 1951. For only the second time in the Championship’s 150-year history, The Open will take place outside of England and Scotland. Championship Days are now completely sold out, but tickets for the Practice Days are still available. Snap your Practice Day tickets up while you still can.

Game of Thrones

Step into Westeros and the lands beyond when Game of Thrones: The Touring Exhibition comes to Belfast. Featuring a mix of immersive environments, interactive exhibitions and multimedia content this exhibition offers a unique opportunity to get up close with props, costumes and set decorations from the hit HBO series Game of Thrones. Arriving in April, this is one not to be missed for fans of the show.

Hillsborough Castle

Life will begin afresh for the 250-year old Hillsborough Castle in Co Down on 1st July, when the Queen’s official residence opens as a year-round visitor destination. To prepare for a targeted 200,000 paying customers a year, it is getting a £20 million makeover. Renovation effort is currently focused on the castle, a Georgian mansion dating to the 1770s, while another part of the project involves restoring a four-acre walled garden.

Walk Along the Maritime Mile

Explore Belfast’s maritime and industrial history via this waterfront trail that connects key attractions, sculptures and viewing points along both sides of the River Lagan. The trail passes key sites including the dry and wet docks, the Salmon of Knowledge (known locally as ‘the big fish’), the SS Nomadic, Titanic Belfast, the Great Light and the Thompson Dock, which is the 44-foot dry dock where RMS Titanic was fitted out.

We Are Vertigo New Attractions

Launching in 2019, We Are Vertigo, which currently offers indoor skydiving, is set to host Ireland’s first indoor Ninja Warrior Assault Course and Inflatable Action Course. Perfect for families seeking a fun day out and centrally located in venues located in South Belfast and the Titanic Quarter, this is definitely one not to miss!

Derry – Walled City 400

March 2019 will mark the 400th anniversary of the completion of the Walls, and to celebrate there is a full and vibrant programme of events taking place throughout Derry city. Ranging from musical ensembles, dance audio plays, historical and contemporary exhibitions, living archaelogy demonstrations and symposia, there is lots from which to choose. A full animation programme will run throughout June, July and August 2019.
