Tbilisi is the capital of Georgia and has a cobblestoned old town that reflects a long, complicated history with periods under Persian and Russian rule. Its diverse architecture encompasses Eastern Orthodox churches, ornate Art Nouveau buildings and Soviet Modernist structures, as well as Narikala, a reconstructed 4th-century fortress, and Kartlis Deda, a statue of the ‘Mother of Georgia’.
Istanbul straddles Europe and Asia across the Bosphorus Strait. Its Old City reflects cultural influences of the many empires that once ruled here. In the Sultanahmet district, the open-air, Roman-era Hippodrome was for centuries the site of chariot races, and Egyptian obelisks also remain. The Byzantine Hagia Sophia features a soaring 6th-century dome and rare Christian mosaics. The Grand Bazaar, one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world, is quite an experience!
